XERF vs Thermage, Morpheus8 & Ultherapy: A Clear Guide to Skin Tightening in Toronto

XERF vs Thermage, Morpheus8 & Ultherapy: A Clear Guide to Skin Tightening in Toronto

If you've started researching non-surgical skin tightening, you've likely come across the same names again and again: Thermage, Morpheus8, Ultherapy, Sofwave. Each promises firmer skin, and each works a little differently, which can make choosing feel overwhelming.

This guide makes it simple. We'll introduce the newest technology on the market, XERF, and show you exactly how it compares with the treatments you've already heard of, so you can make an informed decision with confidence.

What Is XERF?

XERF (pronounced "zerf") is the newest generation of non-surgical skin tightening, developed by Cynosure Lutronic. It's described as the world's first multi-frequency monopolar radiofrequency treatment for structural skin tightening.

The idea behind it is simple.

Most radiofrequency devices deliver energy at one frequency. XERF delivers two, 6.78 MHz and 2 MHz, within the same pulse. This allows it to heat the shallow, middle and deeper layers of the skin in a single pass.

In other words, rather than treating one layer of the skin, XERF works through its full structure, stimulating collagen for firmer, smoother and more defined skin.

It's also very new to North America. Canada was the first North American market for XERF, following Health Canada clearance in 2025.

Why XERF Stands Out

  • No needles. The treatment is completely non-invasive.
  • No numbing. No topical anesthetic and no waiting for it to take effect.
  • No downtime. You can return to your day immediately after your appointment.
  • Fully customized. Three depth settings and ten intensity levels allow each treatment to be tailored to your skin and facial structure.
  • Designed for comfort. Gradual Wave Fit pulses and integrated cryogen cooling with every pulse keep the skin's surface comfortable.
  • Results that build over time. Most clients notice a tightening effect right away, with continued improvement over the following weeks as new collagen forms.

XERF vs Thermage: What's the Difference?

This is the comparison we're asked about most often, and for good reason.

Thermage has been a trusted name in radiofrequency skin tightening since 2002, and Thermage FLX is its latest generation. Both XERF and Thermage use monopolar radiofrequency to heat the deeper layers of the skin and stimulate collagen, with no surgery and no needles.

The difference lies in how the energy is delivered.

  • One frequency vs two. Thermage works at a single frequency. XERF combines two frequencies in every pulse to reach multiple depths of the skin at once.
  • Comfort. Thermage uses vibration and cooling to manage heat, and mild to moderate discomfort is its most commonly reported side effect. XERF was engineered with comfort as a priority, so no numbing is required.
  • Customization. XERF allows us to use gentler settings on delicate areas and deeper settings where more support is needed, all within the same session.
  • Recovery. Thermage notes that redness can last up to 24 hours and swelling up to a few days. With XERF, there is no downtime.

The bottom line: Thermage paved the way for radiofrequency skin tightening. XERF represents the next step forward, with greater depth, greater control and a more comfortable experience.

XERF vs Morpheus8: Is Microneedling Necessary?

Morpheus8 is radiofrequency microneedling. Fine needles penetrate the skin and release radiofrequency energy beneath the surface.

It's an excellent option for texture, acne scarring and resurfacing, but it is a more involved treatment. Numbing cream is usually required, redness and small marks can last for a few days, and it's often performed as a series.

XERF works entirely from the surface of the skin, with no needles and no broken skin. If your primary goal is firmness and lift, XERF offers a more comfortable path with no recovery time.

XERF vs Ultherapy and Sofwave: Radiofrequency vs Ultrasound

Ultherapy and Sofwave belong to a different category. They use ultrasound rather than radiofrequency.

Ultherapy targets the deep foundational layers beneath the skin, while Sofwave targets the middle layer of the skin. Both work by creating small, focused points of heat at set depths.

Ultrasound can be effective for lifting, but because the energy is concentrated at deep points, many patients find Ultherapy in particular uncomfortable.

Radiofrequency heats the tissue more broadly and evenly. With two frequencies working together, XERF tightens through the shallow, middle and deeper layers in one treatment, for smooth, natural-looking firmness.

Skin Tightening Treatments Compared at a Glance

Treatment How it works Needles or numbing? Downtime Best for
XERF Multi-frequency radiofrequency (two frequencies at once) No needles, no numbing None Laxity, jawline, jowls, neck and brow
Thermage FLX Single-frequency radiofrequency No needles Minimal; possible redness or swelling Firmness, fine lines, mild laxity
Morpheus8 Radiofrequency microneedling Needles; numbing usually required A few days of redness and marks Texture, scarring, resurfacing
Ultherapy Micro-focused ultrasound No needles Minimal Lift in deeper support layers
Sofwave Ultrasound (middle layer of skin) No needles Minimal Fine lines, mild laxity

Is XERF Right for You?

XERF is an excellent choice if you're noticing:

  • A softening jawline or early jowls
  • Laxity under the chin or along the neck
  • A heavier or lower brow
  • Skin that no longer feels as firm as it once did
  • Fine lines you'd like to smooth

XERF isn't only for mature skin. Many of our clients choose it as a preventative treatment to maintain firmness over time. And because radiofrequency doesn't target pigment, it can generally be used across a wide range of skin tones, following an assessment.

It's important to note that XERF is not a substitute for a surgical facelift where there is significant loose skin. For mild to moderate laxity and natural-looking results, however, it is one of the most advanced non-surgical options available.

Frequently Asked Questions About XERF

Is XERF available in Canada?

Yes. XERF received Health Canada clearance in 2025, and Canada was its first launch market in North America. It is available at The Essence in Kleinburg, just north of Toronto.

Is XERF better than Thermage?

Both are monopolar radiofrequency treatments, but XERF is the newer technology. It combines two frequencies in a single pulse to reach multiple depths of the skin at once, offers more settings for customization, and doesn't require numbing. The right choice always depends on your skin, which is why we recommend a consultation.

Does XERF hurt?

Most clients describe a sensation of controlled warmth. Integrated cooling with every pulse keeps the surface of the skin comfortable, so no numbing is needed.

Is there any downtime after XERF?

No. You can return to your normal routine immediately after treatment.

When will I see results?

Many clients notice a tightening effect right away. Results continue to improve over the following weeks as the skin builds new collagen.

How many XERF treatments will I need?

This depends on your skin, the degree of laxity and your goals. We'll recommend a personalized plan during your consultation.

How much does XERF cost in the GTA?

At The Essence, XERF starts at $1,200 for a half face. A full face is $1,450 at our introductory price, and face and neck is $2,100.

When you're ready to take the next step toward firmer, more lifted skin, we look forward to welcoming you to The Essence.
