Prenatal Lymphatic Drainage: How It Eases Pregnancy Swelling (and Why Weekly Sessions Help)
Pregnancy is a beautiful thing. Swollen ankles, puffy hands and legs that feel like they've run a marathon by 3 p.m.? Less so.
If you're expecting and feeling heavier, achier or more swollen by the week, you're not imagining it, and you're definitely not alone. The good news is that there's a gentle, deeply relaxing treatment designed for exactly this stage of life: prenatal lymphatic drainage.
Here's everything you need to know about lymphatic drainage massage during pregnancy, how it helps, and why so many of our mamas-to-be make it part of their weekly routine leading up to delivery.
Why Does Pregnancy Cause So Much Swelling?
During pregnancy, your body is working overtime. Blood volume rises significantly, hormones relax your blood vessels, and your growing baby puts pressure on the veins that carry fluid back up from your legs.
The result is that fluid has a harder time making its way back to your heart, so it pools in the tissues instead. That's why swelling (also called edema) tends to show up in the feet, ankles, legs and hands, and why it usually gets worse as the day goes on and as you move into the second and third trimesters.
This is where your lymphatic system comes in. Think of it as your body's drainage and clean-up crew: a network of vessels and nodes that collects excess fluid from the tissues and returns it to circulation. When there's more fluid than the system can keep up with, you feel it as puffiness, heaviness and discomfort.
What Is Prenatal Lymphatic Drainage?
Prenatal lymphatic drainage is a specialized form of manual lymphatic drainage adapted for pregnancy. Instead of deep pressure, it uses light, slow, rhythmic movements that gently encourage lymphatic fluid to move toward the lymph nodes, where it can be processed and carried away.
It feels nothing like a deep-tissue massage. It's soft, soothing and incredibly calming, and most clients describe walking out feeling lighter from head to toe.
At The Essence, our Prenatal Lymphatic Drainage, Body & Face is a 90-minute treatment that focuses on:
- The legs, where swelling and heaviness are usually most noticeable
- The arms and hands
- The chest and the sides of the body
- The face, to ease puffiness and tension
The abdomen is not directly treated. You're positioned comfortably and supported throughout, so you and your baby can simply relax.
The Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage During Pregnancy
1. Less swelling in the legs, ankles and feet
This is the big one. By helping fluid move out of the tissues and back into circulation, lymphatic drainage can visibly reduce puffiness. Research supports it, too: in a study published in Nursing Research and Practice, pregnant women between their fifth and eighth months who received an hour of manual lymph drainage on their legs showed a measurable reduction in leg volume over the course of the day, compared with days without treatment.
2. Relief from heavy, tired, achy legs
Swelling doesn't just look uncomfortable, it feels uncomfortable. Clinical research on pregnant women in their third trimester has also linked manual lymphatic drainage with relief from leg heaviness, pain and tingling. Many of our clients say this is the part they notice first.
3. A less puffy, more refreshed face
Pregnancy puffiness often shows up in the face as well, especially in the mornings. The facial portion of the treatment helps depuff and release tension through the jaw, neck and shoulders, so you look as rested as we hope you feel.
4. Deep relaxation and better rest
The slow, rhythmic nature of lymphatic drainage is naturally calming to the nervous system. For many expectant mothers, it's the most relaxed they've felt in weeks, and many tell us they sleep better that night.
5. Time that's just for you
Between appointments, nursery planning and everything else on your list, pregnancy can leave very little room for yourself. Ninety minutes of quiet, nurturing care is something both your body and mind will thank you for.
How Often Can You Get Prenatal Lymphatic Drainage?
Because it's so gentle, prenatal lymphatic drainage can be enjoyed as often as once a week.
And that's exactly what we recommend for many of our clients, especially in the final weeks leading up to delivery, when swelling and heaviness tend to peak. The effects of lymphatic drainage are cumulative, so regular sessions help keep fluid moving and keep you feeling your best as your due date approaches.
A few ways our clients like to plan it:
- Weekly in the third trimester for ongoing relief when swelling is at its most noticeable
- Every two weeks earlier on, as a maintenance treatment
- Before a special occasion, like a baby shower or maternity photoshoot, to look and feel your most refreshed
Your practitioner will help you find the rhythm that feels right for your body.
Is Lymphatic Drainage Safe During Pregnancy?
For most healthy pregnancies, gentle lymphatic drainage performed by a trained practitioner is a lovely, low-intensity treatment. That said, every pregnancy is different, so we always ask that you check with your doctor or midwife before booking and let us know about any pregnancy complications.
Prenatal lymphatic drainage may not be suitable if you have:
- High blood pressure or preeclampsia
- A history of blood clots or deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- A high-risk pregnancy
- An active infection, fever or skin infection
- Heart or kidney conditions
An important note: some swelling is a normal part of pregnancy, but sudden or severe swelling of the face, hands or feet, or swelling in only one leg (especially with pain, redness or warmth), can be a sign of something more serious. If you notice either, contact your doctor or midwife right away rather than booking a massage.
RMT or Medical Aesthetician: Which Should You Choose?
We offer our Prenatal Lymphatic Drainage with both our Registered Massage Therapists and our medical aestheticians, all trained in The Essence's signature lymphatic drainage method.
The main difference comes down to insurance. Treatments with our RMTs can be claimed through your extended health benefits (depending on your provider and plan). If you have massage therapy coverage, this is a wonderful way to put it to use during pregnancy, when you'll appreciate it most.

Yes. Lymphatic drainage can be performed during pregnancy when it's adapted for the expectant body, which is exactly what our prenatal treatment is designed to do. We recommend getting the go-ahead from your doctor or midwife first.
How often should I get prenatal lymphatic drainage?
As often as weekly. Many clients book weekly sessions in the third trimester and the weeks leading up to delivery, when swelling is usually at its peak.
Is the belly massaged during the treatment?
No. The abdomen is not directly treated. We focus on the legs, arms, chest, sides of the body and face.
Does prenatal lymphatic drainage hurt?
Not at all. The pressure is light and rhythmic, and most clients find it deeply relaxing.
Is prenatal lymphatic drainage covered by insurance?
When performed by one of our Registered Massage Therapists, it can be claimed through your extended health benefits, depending on your provider and plan.
What should I do after my treatment?
Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and don't be surprised if you need the washroom a little more often. That's your body doing exactly what we hoped it would.
Your body is doing something incredible. Give it a little extra care along the way. We look forward to welcoming you to The Essence.
